U-T-Bye Herbal Infusion Blend
Most of us have experienced the discomfort that arises when a urinary tract infection is brewing. If you experience them frequently, you know the feeling. And by now we know that there are health implications that come along with antibiotic use, so we look for more natural alternatives when it comes to preventing a full-blown infection!
I want to start by saying that this tea will not be a heal-all answer for you. If you experience very frequent urinary tract infections, that is a signal from the body that something is awry. Creating a basic foundation of health by focusing on diet--removing inflammatory foods, processed foods, alcohol, etc., sleep, managing stress levels, hydration, and movement is the best place to start!
This herb blend is great to have on hand for those times that you feel an infection coming on and want to stop it in its tracks! This formula will increase urinary output to flush out the kidneys and urinary tract, prevent bacteria from "sticking" to the lining of the bladder/urinary tract, inhibit bacterial growth by increasing acidity of the urine, soothe irritated membranes that cause burning sensation, and protect against infections including E. coli.

Preparation and Dosage:
Use 1.5-2 teaspoons tea/cup water. Pour boiling water over the herbs, cover, and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink as-is, or diluted in water warm/cool.
Drink up to 3 cups daily when you feel an infection coming on, until symptoms resolve and then discontinue.
Other helpful suggestions:
- avoid bladder irritants like coffee, alcohol, caffeine, chocolates, carbonated beverages, citrus juices, and peppers
- avoid sugar as it can feed bacteria/yeast
- take a sitz bath with apple cider vinegar
- keep the vaginal area clean and dry, use cotton underwear, and avoid thongs
- consider switching to organic, fragrance free/dye free menstrual pads/tampons
- take probiotics or consume probiotic rich foods
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you develop a persistent or high fever, start to feel pain in the lower back area, or see blood in the urine see your doctor immediately. Natural therapies can be very effective at preventing bacteria from taking hold, but if you have already developed a more severe infection you will likely need antibiotics.
Get to know the plants
Parsley: one of my favourite herbs for kidney health-- a gentle, nutritive diuretic that may prevent or improve symptoms of frequent UTI
Dandelion: reduces urine retention-- acts as a diuretic without depleting potassium
Nettle: has a gentle diuretic action while providing the body with helpful vitamins and minerals, reduces allergic reaction and histamine
Marshmallow root: inhibits bacterial growth by increasing acidity of urine, soothes irritated mucous membranes
Uva Ursi: traditionally used to prevent UTIs, particularly effective against E. coli infections
Cranberries: the tried-and-true when it comes to UTI prevention! Cranberries contain a substance that acts against bacteria by keeping them from "sticking" to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract
