It’s news to many that most oral rinses are extremely harmful to our oral microbiome, the collection of microorganisms, mainly bacteria that reside in our mouths. They also create a whole host of other problems, and contrary to popular belief do nothing to improve bad breath.
An incredible holistic dentist, Mark Burhenne, states that he “considers mouthwash to be one of the top dental mistakes made by dentists and their patients”. Our more recent technological advancements have only now given us evidence of the importance of protecting the oral microbiome. It’s no longer just about using harsh disinfectants to kill odour-causing bacteria in the mouth, because this will also damage the balance of good bacteria in the mouth keeping pathogens OUT!
I could go on about this mouthwash topic, but figured you should read his article instead:
Sage has antimicrobial properties, and can neutralize microbes that promote dental plaque. It has been shown to effectively kill Strep bacteria, and it clears congestion, soothes sore throats, tonsillitis and laryngitis.
Place 1/2-1 T into your mouth and swish around for a minimum of 30 seconds. This oil can be swished for longer periods of time if using for oil pulling.
What is oil pulling?
An Ayurvedic cleansing technique involving swishing oil through the mouth for upwards of 20 minutes. If you can, start with 5 minutes and work your way up. The oil should become thin and white/opaque.
Toted benefits:
Promoting a healthy oral microbiome
Freshens breath/improves halitosis
Draws impurities out of the gums and cleans teeth
Helps to improve detoxification
Improves oral health which in turn improves whole body health
I HIGHLY recommend using this swish in conjunction with a tongue scraper! Tongue scraping is an absolute game changer for oral health, trust me. It is also a great way to connect with your body and understand its messages to you. The coating on the tongue is an indicator of your state of internal health, and monitoring it through the use of your tongue scraper is a great way to keep your health in check daily.
